"Pleasantly Surprised After Many Negative Postings Here"
After reading many negative posts on this site, I almost cancelled my reservation for May 12-16th. I am so glad I did not do this!
Upon arrival at CDG, we took the RER to lthe large Chatelet transfer station, switched to the subway and a couple of stops later, we were at the Tulleries stop. There was the St. James across the street and just to the right as we climbed out of this stop. The location adjacent to metro line one, the Gardens and Museums is incredibly convenient. The subway system of Paris is very similar to that of NYC. Very modest cost and easy transfers from RER lines to the many different Metro subway lines.
Since it was only 7:45 am, we assumed we would check our bags and begin seeing the sights (Tulleries Garden, Louvre, Orsay, Concorde, Palace Royal etc are a short walk from the hotel). The pleasant check-in staff informed us our room was waiting and we could check in!
Our room (for three adults, one being 21 years old) did not look like a junior suite pictured on the web site. It was a loft with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs and the den area (including a fold out sofa and small bathroom) was down stairs. It faced out into a very quite courtyard, away from the very busy main street. Since we did not come to Paris to sleep and we are all physically able to manage steps, this was not a disappointment. The lobby areas (several) were well appointed and spacious. The only area of wear appeared to be in the main lobby area closest to the window overlooking the main street.
We did not eat at the hotel as each morning we were in a hurry to get out and see the sights. A quick breakfast option is a few feet from the hotel as were several others places to eat. There was even a McDonald's just a block or two away (referred to jokingly as the "American Embassy" by one of the hotel staff) We did not take advantage of the spa or the lap pool.
Each night when we returned, turn down services had been provided. Each time we passed the front desk, there were smiles and cordial greetings.
We had a very early flight to Vienna so I checked with the lobby staff about taxis the night before we were to leave. The staff was more than cordial, immediately picked up the phone and had a taxi reserved for pickup the next morning at 4:00 am. At 4:00 am, the staff cheerfully checked us out and the taxi arrived. I chose to take a very expensive taxi to CDG because I was unfamilar with this large airport and had a matter to resolve before checking in for our next flight. A reverse of our arrival would have been much less expensive and probably would have gotten us to the airport easily but I didn't want to chance getting lost or other delays. At that early hour, the taxi rushed through Paris and to the airport unimpeded.
I understand that all reviews are very subjective and all experiences are not the same. I did not experience any of the negative experiences posted on this site.
The Saint James is a typically older European hotel. It is not a crisp, new "chrome and glass" type hotel. It is spread out over several sections of buildings and, from what I have read, the rooms may be in various stages of renovation or repair. Although I saw no need, based on the friendly staff, I would guess I would have been moved to another suite if I had asked.

"Nice Hotel, Great Location"
Nice, clean hotel with close proximity to Paris' major site-seeing locations and a Metro station across the street. We booked the "family package" which included a phenomenal breakfast buffet and a pickup at the airport (it probably is much better to take the train into town). The staff was friendly and helpful. The downside to the location is that it is very touristy and shops and restaurants close early.

"Wonderful Stay"
We stayed at the St. James and Albany during a week long vacation to Paris at the end of May. The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Upon arriving, we were told we had been upgraded to a superior double. We arrived early in the morning (well before the stated 3pm check in time). While we couldn't check in immediately and hadn't planned on it, we were able to check our luggage, and our room was ready by noon. Our room had a nice courtyard view and was a nice size with a seating area and king bed. The location of the hotel is fabulous. We walked to most of the main sites, and the metro
was very convenient for those sites not within walking distance. We found a nice market behind the hotel that provided inexpensive snacks, fruit, water, and wine. Great cafes surrounded the hotel. Those cafes a few blocks off the main street of the hotel were a bit less pricey. The room showed some wear and tear but overall was in fine quality and very comfortable. We were pleased with the housekeeping services that we received and found the spa staff to be very friendly. The front desk staff was also very helpful and ensured
that we had a taxi arrive on time for our early morning departure to the airport. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant but did order room service and were quite pleased with the quality of food and timely delivery. We would certainly stay at the hotel again as the location, helpful staff and attractive surroundings really helped to make a wonderful vacation.

"Just fine"
Great location. Nice lobby, courtyard and bar. Interior is surprisingly peaceful given all the commotion outside on the Rue de Rivoli. Reception and staff were just fine. I think that speaking French is helpful. Recommended restaurants were all quite good and reasonable. Rooms are dated and configured oddly. Hot water is elusive at certain times--take showers early! Given that you are in Paris, you spend little time in the room. Location and convenience is the big asset.

"Best Hot Chocolate in the world!"
The hotel is in a prime location just opposite Tuilleries Gardens and Metro. We were upgraded to a Superior room (room 501) which was wonderful and very quiet and spacious with 2 sets of French windows so very light and airy.
The hotel had a fantastic massage chair in the lobby, which was perfect after a long day of site-seeing. I wouldn't recommend buying the hotel breakfast though, but if you really fancy a treat, try Angelina's a block down the road which does the best hot chocolate in the world.
I would also recommend doing the Paris walking or bike tours which are a great way to see the city. Unfortunately the internet was either down or not working in our room, but even so, the hotel charge a fortune for internet access, so best bet is to go to MacDonalds at the end of the block, where its free!
Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a romantic few days away.

"Comfortable and relaxing"
The hotel was much better than expected! The location is superb, and the spa with the pool and steam room excellent after long days walking. The beds were very comforting too so every morning we felt rested and fit for another day of sightseeing. Breakfast buffet was wonderful, free newspaper included. Staff friendly and the rooms nicely decorated and not out of date at all. Only the bathroom could do with some new painting maybe. Also the inner court yard was nice to have a drink or meal. We will go back to this hotel! We were in room 420 (non-smoking floor) and the room looked out onto a side street. To all who have booked: have a nice stay, like we did!
