"Very Good Experience of Bavaria"
Had the pleasure of traveling on business to Bad Reichenhall in August 2002 and stayed for four days at the Axelmannstein. It was a bit warmer than usual for the area and the lack of air conditioning reduced comfort levels during the hottest part of the day, but keeping the French doors open provided adequate ventilation during the day and optimal in-room temperatures at night.
The single rooms are somewhat spartan, but the staff is extraordinarily courteous and facilitative. And you can't beat the surroundings...
While there, I enjoyed an evening gala event nearby in 18th Century dress, and a short jaunt to Salzburg for an opera and dinner at a castle.
Recommend that you skip breakfast at the hotel (though they put out a feast) and walk a few steps down the cobblestone road to an outdoor cafe across from the spa. Best capuccino I ever had and you can't beat the view.
I plan to go back ASAP with my wife for some R&R. Easily one of my favorite places in Europe.

"Excellent service in a beautiful estate"
Having stayed in many five star hotels around the world, I can only again and again praise the charme and service of Steigenberger hotels in general (for they do not belong to an international hotel group which standardises everything from the breakfast buffet till toilet paper) and the Axelmannstein specifically. If you are looking for a business hotel, then you might as well stay in Munich or Salzburg. The Axelmannstein opens up its elegance and character as a place of relaxation. It had been a "spa hotel" when the idea and marketing of the nowadays extremely popular "wellness and spa wave" was not even born. So the Axelmannstein is more of a Grandhotel within the Alps. As you might know, Grandhotels cannot always keep up with all international standards of modern hospitality (such as AC) but they compensate their guests with their unique charme and excellent service - beyond the hormogenity of Marriott, Inter-Contintental and Hilton. I enjoyed my 5 days at this hotel during which I had the pleasure to discover the beautiful surroundings of Bad Reichenhall including Salzburg and the Alps.
