"nothing to complain about..."
inexpensive hotel with very friendly and helpful staff.
okay, some of the rooms are below the floor you enter, but the hotel is built on a slope - so you still got windows down there :-) and there's so much to see in istanbul you surely won't be sitting in your room and look out of the window!
every day they cleaned the room, changed the towels and refilled the minibar. another plus is for the silent nights - no sounds of the street or anything like that.
the staff was very helpful; they gave us (after an offered welcome-drink ;-)) a citymap and lots of useful tips where to go and how. they really seemed to care that we're content with everything!
to make a (not so) long story short: i can only recommend this hotel to everybody!

"recommend Sumengen Hotel"
We had an excellent experience at Sumengen Hotel in Istanbul, located in a historic old Ottoman house in the Sultanahmet district, very convenient to Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, Arasta Bazaar, and many small and charming restaurants. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was generous, served in a lovely sunlit room. The staff, in particular the front desk staff, was extremely friendly and helpful (as are most Turkish people). We would definitely return to this hotel.

"Great location/ good accomodations"
My family stayed at the Sumengen twice on our recent trip to Turkey: once for 5 nights and then again for 2 nights. The hotel is a little thread bare but more than adequate. We had the double family room. It included a small frig and A/C. The only distraction is that the Metro runs very close to the hotel but we soon got used to it. The lift was a deciding factor in selecting the Sumengen. The breakfast is very good and the staff are very helpful. The Sumengen compares well with the other hotels I have stayed at on my previous trips to Istanbul. We will stay here in the future.

Could have been better, definitely
I booked a room at Sumengen for six nights (in Dec 31, out Jan 6) and paid by Visa the 27th. I called the hotel one day in advance just to set my supposedly free connection from the airport. I was told there was no reservation, though I had paid three days before. Finally they found me a room anyway (but I had to pay by myself the taxi to the hotel). I and my girlfriend got for the first three nights a room at floor -3 (that is three floors underground!), terribly hot and not too clean. Personnel at the desk was most unfriendly (but one guy was ok), and we could not get any hints, suggestions nor help, though I told them I used to be a colleague of them, being a concierge for six years in Rome and Venice. According to them, I ought to pay even the map of the city, which is sponsored by local enterpreneurs and doesn't cost them a penny. On the contrary, the young lady at the breakfast room was nice and we enjoyed good choiche and nice food. Next time I'll choose another hotel, and I'll book in advance just for the first night, finding something better on the spot. I have got the strong impression the whole "no reservation sir" story was set up just to force us to accept the terrible room we slept in the first three nights. I recommend NOT to stay at this place. People in Instanbul may be very friendly and kind. Maybe Sumengen is ran by foreigners... |
