The George Hotel continues to charm its visitors...

Designed by Robert Adam over 200 years ago, The George Hotel today continues to charm visitors. Its outside facade is a listed building and inside many of the original architectural details have been retained, whilst undergoing extensive refurbishment. The lobby and public areas have been carefully restored and upgraded to provide a warmth and comfort reminiscent of a bygone era.

All of the hotel's 195 luxuriously appointed guest rooms and suites provide the guests with an atmosphere of sheer comfort and hospitality, two qualities which we are particularly proud of in Scotland. In addition, many of the rooms are further enhanced with superb views over the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh Castle.

The George Edinburgh offers a variety of dining choices, from the impeccable service and innovative cuisine of Le Chambertin Restaurant, with its excellent wine cellar, to the casual atmosphere of Carvers Restaurant, where a choice of sumptuous buffets and healthy dishes can be enjoyed. A variety of snacks and selected teas is served at the Raised Lobby, while the Clans Bar is the perfect venue to sample some of the finest spirits on earth.

The George Hotel is in very central location near Princes street - lots of nightlife around it. In common with most of Scotland food service ends early to allow more drinking time. Duncan, Lima

Wonderful! Highly recommended!
We were planning a girls weekend for me and 3 of my 40+ friends. We booked the flight and hotel in Glasgow, but at the last minute decided to go to Edinburgh instead. Great choice for someone who has never seen Scotland! I did my research and selected the George Hotel. They should update the photos because after spending millions on refurbishment, you would be much more impressed with the new design. It is more sedated and has lots of seating, couches, comfy chairs and tables in the main entry. The colors are more muted and the feeling is fresher. We often saw many people just sitting having a drink or a cup of tea. Off the lobby is a stunning dining room where we had breakfast and dinner. It has high ceilings, beautiful damask sheers to offer privacy between groups of tables, a large marble centerpiece table that seats about 8 and another table on a small stage at the front of the room. The lighting was dim for ambiance, but bright enough to read the menu and see your food. The buffet breakfast consisted of sausage, bacon, scrambled and poached eggs, tomatoes, a fresh fruit bar, cereals, toast, rolls, jams and yes, Haggis. I'm not a buffet lover, but it was OK and the selection was good. I thought all the fruit was great as it was freshly peeled, not the canned variety. The server brought us large pots of coffee and tea, slices of toast and milk and white and brown sugar in the morning and were quick to clear empty dishes. We arrived after midnight on a Friday night, but the town was lively and the staff at the hotel was happy to serve us. We were exhausted and went off to our adjoining rooms. We tried to brush our teeth and found only boiling hot water in the sink, shower and toilet. When brought to the attention of the staff, they immediately sent someone up to check it out and said they would repair it. Within a few minutes, a staff person delivered bottled water for us to brush our teeth and wash our face. The next morning, all was well and we enjoyed a warm shower and breakfast. We had two twin adjoining rooms and opened the door between to keep in contact. This would be excellent for a family. We all agreed that these were by far the most comfortable beds we had ever slept in. Unbelievable. I need to get one for my house now! Topped with a white duvet and purple wool blanket, it was heavenly. The room had a hair dryer, that had to be plugged in in the bedroom. I understand this is UK code. We didn't utilize them, but there were two cups with tea, coffee and a tea pot. The rooms were large with a desk, chair and several lights and reading lights at each bed. For non-europeans, it took a while to figure out that you need to insert your room card into the slot next to the light switch to enable the lights to turn on. A good conservation effort and a way NOT to misplace your room key. Our rooms faced the back of the hotel and we were not far from the new city area so at night, it got fairly loud if you left the windows open. On Saturday night we were sereaded by a young man who had had a few drinks before he started for home. We closed the window and went back to sleep. We went in November and did not notice if there was a/c. The location was extrememly convient as we walked everywhere. The famous castle was about blocak towards the main center, we walked the Royal Mile and saw Hollyrood palace. We only took a train/bus to get to the city. We walked about 5 minutes from the train station to the hotel. Attached to the restaurant and located directly on George Street is the Tempus bar/restaurant. With loud music and funky decor, it offered all sorts of fun drinks, wine a beer. We opted to have one while we waited for a table to open up. We tried the margherita, a glass of champagne, a mangotini and a glass of Pinot Grigio for four of us. Our Australian waitress was charming and helpful and even found us in the dining room to deliver water for our server. For dinner, we opted to eat at the restaurant in the hotel and enjoyed the most fabulous Beef Wellington. Cooked to perfection and served with crispy chips (or fries as we call it!) , it was Yummy! Directly across the street from the hotel, we saw a beautiful domed building fully decorated for Chrismtas. It was called "The Dome" and was an old pharmacy school. It had been converted into a function hall/ bar/ restaurant. We walked in and saw THE most fabulous decorations, a Christmas tree sat atop the bar and although it was probably25 feet tall, it didn't even reach the top of the Dome which was adorned by glass panels. We were in such awe of the place that we opted to stay for a drink. Any later than 4:00 in the afternoon and I would suggest dressing up a bit, but we were fine in our shopping attire. Before we left Edinburgh, we went back for lunch! We found the service and atmosphere perfect. We will certainly be back as I want to bring my family next time. I would hightly recommend this hotel. You will not be disappointed!

"Great Weekend"
Stayed over the weekend of the 16th June. We had a suite 'The Portland' and it was amazing. The staff are some of the friendliest and welcoming we have come accross. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is well suituated for the sights of Edinburgh. The restaurent next door was very good, relaxed atmosphere, good food and wine. We will stay here again on our next rip to the Scottish Capital.

"Wonderful service, wonderful view"
My husband and I stayed in a deluxe room in April. Being regular visitors to Edinburgh we've stayed in a number of hotels in the city (including the Balmoral, which a few previous reviewers have mentioned). This, however, is the one I would recommend to friends and family. Three reasons: * Great staff service * Breath-taking views from some rooms * Very central location Reading the other reviews here I agree that the furniture does have a few knocks - but who's looking at the furniture when you've a gorgeous view over the north of the city and the Firth of Forth?! Wow, the view was breath-taking, the downside being that it was a struggle to want to go out and see the city! The George probably could do with a lick of paint, but I honestly did not think it at all shabby, just a little tired. The room was huge, and so light and airy. Can't say about the standard rooms, however. Parking may be a problem if the hotel is very busy - but for £9.50 the hotel valet parked our car at the back of the hotel, where we parked for 24 hours without a hitch. And lets face it, on George Street, do you really expect lots of parking? If you want that, then stay somewhere less central. From the Concierge to Check-In, staff here were marvellous - friendly, courteous and professional. They really did everything they could to make our stay special, and it worked. We will certainly be checking in to the George on our next visit to this lovely city.
