"Nice surprise"
My sister and I just returned from a week at this hotel. Overall, it was a great experience. The rate was cheap @ $169/night - the hotel is really discounted right now to attract guests following the hurricane renovations. Not all of the work is finished yet. The spa only offers limited services, for example (go to the Ritz for spa services). However, the staff really went out of their way to make us feel at home. We had a lot of staff referring to us by name.
The rooms are cozy, esp. the Westin Heavenly Bed. The bathrooms aren't exactly up to date, but who cares when you're only paying $169/night? The room had a beautiful view of the ocean and was very clean.
The restaurant offerings are limited, but the food is very good. The room service menu was more extensive then the actual restaurant. Our room rate included a huge breakfast buffet w/an omelete station.
The pool area is really nice. We sat on the lagoon side which is less breezy and a bit more secluded. We actually thought the pool area was nicer than the Ritz in terms of the set up.
I would definitely consider staying here again.

"A family friendly experience"
I consider our family to be very snobbish and demanding. We booked the Westin knowing that it is not the most luxurious resort, but expecting a good family-suited experience. What we received was pleasantly surprising. The hotel is in good condition. Not a LA boutique style, but definitely well maintained and in good standard. The various services (Spa, room service, concierge, etc.) were very good and so was the general attitude and help of the staff. Traveling with two babies the staff showed extra flexibility in addressing our special requests, especially in adjusting the food menu items to our babies' diet. The food is perfectly reasonable, much better than what you can get in most tourist traps in Cancun... The swimming pools are great, the beach is perfect and in general it was a very good choice.
Bottom line: This is not the top-notch style place, but very well suited for families traveling with young children.
