Opened in 2006, theVila Gale Santa Cruz Hotel is housed in a contemporary five-storey building, set by the sea with views of the mountains, 500 metres from Madeira airport. The 262 guestrooms feature light decor and contemporary furnishings and open onto balconies.
The hotel offers a range of spa services and beauty treatments, including a sauna, Turkish bath, Roman thermal baths and massage.

Health-conscious guests can also work out in the fitness room, tone up with an aerobics class or enjoy a dip in the indoor and outdoor pools, and then unwind at the poolside bar. The Inevitavel Restaurant serves a range of local and international dishes, while the Soul and Blues Bar features DJs and serves a wide variety of drinks.

LOCATION

Santa Cruz, Madeira Island, Portugal. In front of the sea, at 15 minutes from Funchal and 5 minutes from the Airport. Golf Course 10 minutes away.

Golfers will find two courses sited within seven kilometres of the hotel. Those with families can spend a day at the Water Park, 500 metres away, or explore the Botanical Gardens, five kilometres from the hotel. Madeira Airport is five kilometres from the hotel, an approximate driving time of five minutes.

Excellent value.
An excellent hotel well worth four stars. Wonderful views from a very comfortable room. Very peaceful especially at night. Planes never disturbed us but were great fun to watch. A lovely quiet location during the day, much better than the busy city of Funchal and yet close enough to easily get to places. Staff both helpful and very friendly especially in the dining room. Food good. Would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

"clean and comfortable "
Vila Gale Santa Cruz Hotel's rooms were very clean and comfortable and there were no disturbances from the aeroplanes in fact we became anoraks and took a great deal of interest in watching them land and take off. Breakfast was buffet style but the chef who cooked the omelettes was not available at the weekend when the hotel became busier. Eating out in Santa Cruz is basic but reasonably priced. Restaurante La Villa although this was more expensive. The coffee and cakes in the cafe across from the hotel were wonderful. Local buses are an experience not to be missed and not for the faint- hearted.

"A really nice hotel"
We stayed at the Vila Gale as a last minute deal in April 2006. The hotel has only been open for a couple of months - it looks terific - very clean and modern. Bedrooms are excellent with flat screen TV and DVD/CD player as well as all the luxuries you would expect in a 4 star place. The one downside was that the food in the buffett restaurant was very poor. We were only "Bed and Breakfast" but after eating there once we decided on using the local bars for the rest of the stay. Had we been half-board we would have been miffed. Outdoor pool looks great but was very cold (it was April) and they had the silly rule that you had to wear a cap in the indoor pool - but had none to sell or lend. Swimming wearing a shower cap from your room was not funny! The bar is very relaxing with live music a few times a week. A great place if you want peace and quiet.

"Wonderful hotel"
We have just had two weeks at the Vila Gale and had a wonderful time. The hotel has only been open since February but there seemed to be a good, effecient service provided in all areas. Rooms lovely and big, cleaned every day, linen every three days. TV with DVD only had usual BBC News/Sport and Sky although we couldn't get it on ours. Probably would have been sorted if we had complained but we couldn't be bothered. No indication where to get DVD's from but probably reception would give advice - they seemed to know everything else! Again we couldn't be bothered to find out. As it was April we decided not to use the pool - guessed it would be too cold. Indoor pool requirement for cap is the law not a choice by hotel! Dining room had a glorious view of the pool with the sea and three islands behind. Good start to the day! Food was good with good variety of evening meals. Breakfast included full English (but not our back bacon or "proper" sausages) as well as a variety of cooked meats, cheeses, fruit, cereal, bread, yoghurts and a "light" counter for low fat foods. Good variety of fruit juices, teas and coffee. There was a problem with food being cold, but as soon as we spoke to the Manager it improved the next day and continued to do so. Apparently the new equipment is not up to scratch so they are totally replacing it! We had a problem with a smell in the bathroom which did not get sorted while we were there. Everyone very friendly - all spoke English to a good standard. Glad that we were not in Funchal, every time we went there we were glad to get out of the built up areas teeming with people. The hotel provides a courtesy bus several times each day into Funchal. Not much going on in the village, but wonderful walk along the sea front. We hired a car for 7 days and really enjoyed travelling into the hills and valleys - some of the roads are quite scary in the villages but as long as you watch what you are doing its a great way to get around with no restrictions as to how long you stay as there are on the excusions. Locals seemed to have a reluctance to tolerate drivers unfamiliar with their road system, but we find this in most holiday destinations. I would not recommend the island for families as there are very facilities for children although a new water park is due to open this year just up the road from this hotel, but for us it was ideal.

"Absolutely Wonderful"
Stayed at the Vila Gale Santa Cruz 19th-26th June 2006 booked thru LastMinute.com, smashing place to stay and in my mind worthy of 5 stars although the hotel is 4 star. Opened in February 2006 by Ronaldo. Everything was perfect and couldn't be faulted. Decor,food, service and facilities were first class in a terrific setting within the village community of Santa Cruz. Although down the road from the airport the planes were no bother and noise kept to a minimum. At night you were not interupted by any aircraft noise and the hotel rooms are well soundproofed. We were on the second floor right on the seafront and found it facinating to watch the planes come into land. Infact most people took photos and video footage whilst sunbathing round the poolside. Would definately recommend this hotel for being very comfortable and friendly. The hotel also provides a daily courtesy bus into Funchal every couple or so hours for those who don't have any transport. Health Spa also on sight which is also worth a visit.
