Villa Igea
I stayed at the hotel in July 2006. I am a former travel agent so I am used to using a critical eye. I was lucky enough to be allocated a room facing the square. It was small but perfectly formed. The low star rating must surely be down to the fact that the villa is an annexe to the main hotel Savoia and Jolanda. It has no restaurant etc. The room was decorated in a true Venetian style. The church bell opposite chimes (loudly) at 6pm every night and after the first shock we found it lovely to hear. Other than that we had no disturbing noise at all.
The shower head came off in my daughter's hand (!). We reported it to reception on our way out for the day and it was replaced by the time we got back.
Make sure you get the water bus that stops at Zan Zacharia when you arrive otherwise it means dragging your suitcase over two bridges from St Mark's. St Marks is remarkably close when luggage-free, but miles and miles in heat at the end of a long journey. It is well worth waiting at Marco Polo airport for the correct route! It costs Euro 11pp each way.
Tip: Take the vaporetto to The Lido, disembark and wait for the next number 1 back to the main Island. Guard your place at the front of the queue as queueing is not in Venetian vocabulary. Get on the vaporetto and go straight to the front outside seats. You will then have a bird's eye view all along the length of the Grand Canal. Good at night as well but remember they only run every half hour rather than every ten minutes as they do in the day. I bought a 3 day go-anywhere ticket for Euro25pp.
There is an excellent, good value, air-conditioned snack bar on the corner if you exit the hotel to your left.
The church is beautiful, do go inside.
Considering the extortionate cost of everything in Venice, the rate I paid at this hotel was unbelievable.
As for eating, be aware that there is often a cover charge @ Euro 1.5 pp, there could also be service charge of 12%. Soft drinks @ Euro 4. Try to find all inclusive set menu's but an "Escalope of Chicken, breadcrumbed" could well be a reconstituted burger-type affair.
I will be returning to this hotel. |

"convenient hotel location"
great small hotel with everything you need. Close to San Marco (2 bridges away) and away from the noise. Plenty of restaurants and shops around. The front desk personel was helpfull in many ways and sugested how and what to see in my very short stay. Be aware that venice is a network of people that work with each other. When someone says that something is included or complementary, rest assured that they will sell you something later. gondolas are about 80 dollars for 45 minutes, however, if you really want to see venice take it in the afternoon and pay the extra 30 dollars (1 hour plus) for a ride in the grand canal. its worth it.
venice is special and unique at night, sit in piazza san marco and enjoy the music with a drink and your love one.

"Perfect location"
As earlier stated, the Igea's location is a very short walk to the vaporetto station, as well as the water taxi station. No bridges to cross with your luggage!
The hotel has everything, including A/C, excellent shower, attractive and clean rooms, helpful, friendly staff, elevator, substantial breakfast ... and the prices are reasonable, especially for this location.
We were guided by Tomas (at the desk) to the Trattoria Giardinetto, a five-minute walk away. Excellent food and wine list, in a non-touristy setting.
I'll ask for a front room again, with its piazza and cathedral view. Noise from outside is not an issue, amazing for a hotel 5 minutes away from S Marco.
